The certified manager process requires candidates to demonstrate how they develop as managers and how they have applied their leadership and management skills to achieve a significant business impact.
There are two ways to become certified:
- Exemption Path – for those who have completed cmi diploma level 5 or higher.
- Qualified path – for those who hold a grade-level administrative qualification or have at least five years of relevant experience.
The Criteria and requirements for legal status in the United Kingdom must be approved by the Privy Council; The criteria for appointing a certified manager are very similar to those adopted in other areas.

- 1945 – Appointed Chairman of the Trade Council, Sir Stafford Krebs, Committee chaired by Sir Clive Bello (President of the Confederation of British Industry – CBS Herald), To develop detailed recommendations for the establishment of a central body that manages all aspects. One reason for this step is the realization that although there are professional bodies representing functional activities, There is no similar body to think about public administration and to develop and promote better management.
- 1947 or 1948 – The British Institute of Management (BIM) was formed on the recommendation of the Baillieu report (the source is different from the exact year). [4]
- 1951 – The first British diploma in management studies was launched by BIM and the Ministry of Education.
- 1987 – BIM publishes, Along with other bodies, Two main reports, The composition of directors in the United Kingdom (John Constable and Roger McCormick) and the director’s industry (Charles Handy). These reports led to the formation of the National Forum for Management Education and Development (NFMED), This in turn led to the publication of the first management standards by the Management Charter Initiative (MCI) of the world’s efficiency states.
- 1992 – BIM merges with the Institute of Industrial Directors (IIM) to form the Institute of Management (IM). The status of the IIM donor institution has been transferred to the new institute.
- 2000 – The Institute is granted the status of 250 approvals to provide IM management qualifications.
- 2001 . The Temporary School of Management was established as a group of special interest within the School of Management.
- 2002 – The Faculty of Management obtained the Royal Charter and became the Chartered School of Management.
- 2002 – The administrative qualifications of the College are recognized as part of the National Qualifications for Higher Education framework in the United Kingdom.
- 2002 – The Interim Administrative Institute and CMI enter into a joint agreement for independent status.
- 2003 – Chartered Director is appointed.
- 2005 – The Institute of Management Consultancy (IMC) became an institution within the Institute
- 2005 – The Institute has served as President of the European Management Association (EMA) for three years
- 2005 – The Institute’s first National Conference is held at the Queen’s Hotel in Leeds
- 2006 – The Institute of Business Advisers (IBA) becomes an IMC organization and begins discussions with the aim of integrating IBA and IMC by mid-2007
- 2007 – National Convention held at the Birmingham Metropolitan Hilton Hotel
- 2007 – IBA becomes IBC Business Consulting College
- 2008 – Ruth Spielman is appointed CEO
- 2008 – National Convention held at the Birmingham Metropolitan Hilton Hotel
- 2009 – National Convention is held at the Hilton London Metropolitan Hotel.
- 2011 – Ruth Spielman suddenly left CMI in August, Christopher Kinsella was appointed interim CHIEF Executive Officer
- 2011 – A member survey conducted by Huw Hilditch-Roberts concludes that branches must be abolished to improve interaction with members.
- 2012 – Anne Frank is appointed CEO in June.
- 2013 – New district chiefs are appointed and regional councils elected to take over the branch in October.
- 2014 – Mike Klasper appointed president
CMI membership
- Students – must study a relevant administrative qualification at any level, No.
- Associate – does not require experience or qualifications.
- Participant (ACMI) – Requires a certificate, diploma, administrative qualification at the S/NVQ level or management experience of at least 3 years. This classification has the right to use acmi standard characters.
- Membership (MCMI) – grade level/equivalent management qualification and at least 3 years of required management experience. This classification has the right to use mcmi standard characters.
- Fellow (FCMI) – required level of degree/ equivalent management qualification and at least 10 years of management experience, Three of them must be at the strategic level. The degree has the right to use the FCMI appointment and is granted by the evaluation committee.
- Companion (CCMI) – the highest level of membership, Granted by invitation only.

Each level follows a format in which some of the credits earned lead to awards (which develop basic skills and appropriate level knowledge), Certificates (covering a wider area and building on the knowledge gained in awards) and diplomas (acquiring a full range of skills and knowledge). Administrative and leadership qualifications are available through accredited centres. The selection of the appropriate administrative qualification for the study begins with the selection of the appropriate level of qualification, Which depends largely on past experience and learning. Level 5 qualifications are equivalent to the foundation level and level 7 qualifications are equivalent to the master’s level graduated.
